The
photos below are from a from UC Berkeley collection, posted on the
Library of Congress
website and donated by Hart Hyatt North, the first Immigration
Commissioner on Angel Island. All photos appear to have been taken around
the time the station opened in 1910. Barracks interiors appear to pre-date
any immigrant habitation.
Barracks interiors. Note that the walls were not initially painted. Paint
and putty became necessary when immigrants first wrote, then carved poems
on the walls.
Original bathroom
and lavatory, replaced around 1912 due to poor design and 'cleanability'.
Porch at the rear
of barracks, apparently replaced by the new bathrooms around 1912.
