The following pages show many stages of the ongoing work at the Immigration Station site, which was closed to the public in mid-August, 2005 for a $15,000,000 renovation project. Since the public is not allowed anywhere on the site during the work, which is anticipated to complete in early 2007, we are bringing you a collection of photos to show you the progress. While construction is now complete, the station is still closed to allow interpretive work to proceed. Currently, the re-opening is planned for February, 2009.

Completed work includes:

bulletLogging out many of the 'volunteer' trees that compromise the original landscaping plan from 1910.
bulletRecreating the dock landing where ferries brought the immigrants for detention.
bulletRecreating the covered stairway from the Detention Barracks to the (now defunct) Administration Building.
bulletPlotting out the footprint of the Administration Building.
bulletStabilizing the Detention Barracks Museum, adding an elevator to the second floor, preserving/revealing poetry on the walls, and providing enhanced interpretation of the barracks.

These photos would not be possible without the cooperation and assistance (to say nothing of photographic skills) of Korwyn Peck, Senior Construction Inspector on the job. Now that construction is largely complete, work will begin on the interpretive plan. We hope to show you interim progress on that, but it is likely that the changes will be less dramatic than the construction work.

Before and after photos from Google Earth are shown below.

Above is an extract from Google Earth done in 2005, showing the (formerly) heavily wooded Immigration Station area before work began in August, 2005. Below is a newer Google Earth photo, extracted in April, 2008. You can easily see the dramatic changes in the number of trees and the recreation of the administration building footprint. Less noticeable are the addition of a landing in front of the administration building that recreates a portion of the dock, and the movement of the stone monument to an area to the left of the hospital.
