August 15: Site construction is virtually complete. The next stage is development and installation of interpretive materials.

Installed perimeter fence, gate pilasters and gate, bollard lights, repaired road. Restoration of historic foot path. Restoration of old paths, new cap and columns on and in the reservoir which now collects rain for irrigation. Unrestored POW mess hall is next to the reservoir.
New hospital trail with brick inlaid to show original brick trails. Restoration of hospital asphalt foot path and replication of historic light pole. Installed perimeter fence, cut trees that had grown among the former employee cottages, repaired bollards in left background
New stairs and elevated walkways to meet safety needs. New bollard light, paths for physically challenged, and irrigation pump. Irrigation controller (left) new paths, new road, new shuttle bus stop.
Front porch entry floor rebuilt to allow easier wheelchair access. New stairs to hospital, new light pole. New retaining wall meshes with the old one. Old immigration mess hall slab has been patched, and the monument and benches removed. Since the monument only dated from the 80's it has been moved to a new vantage point near the hospital.
New guardrails attached to historic walls in front of the hospital. The old road is patched or replaced, landscape has been planted. A fresh coat of paint encapsulates the historic, lead-based paint. Planter rings added to palm trees, orange mesh material protects new plants from the island's deer herd.
New exit and walkway from the barracks on the second floor. Fence has been repaired and vegetation cleared. New fencing has been integrated with the repaired, historic fence. Reconstructed fence from Perimeter Road, at dusk.
Original administration building foundations and new. Wharf lanterns, to be installed later, will replicate the historic version. New flashing, new roof, historic chimney. The recreation of the administration building footprint will allow visitors to walk from the wharf, on a simulated route through the building and up to the barracks, similar to the path followed by the immigrants.
New stair from the remnants of the administration building to the barracks. The footprint of the administration building was replicated by the stairs and flat grassy and stone areas in the background. Exterior stairs to the barracks were reconstructed. The end wall finish was dismantled, retrofitted with seismic framing and hardware, and restored. New fire hydrant and support for the building's sprinklers is in the foreground. Stairs were reconstruction to accommodate a new, state-of-the-art wheelchair lift.
