The Angel Island Association (AIA) recently
acquired a group of 55 photos taken by nurse Olive Gates at Fort McDowell
West Garrison in 1918-1919. Olive Gates was a nurse on duty at Angel Island. The
first slide is Olive with soldier Dinehy, who appears with her in several
pictures, perhaps her beau? The photos are available here as PDF file in
slideshow format. The file is quite large (4.6M) and is most appropriate
for those with high speed internet connections. Click
here to view the file.
Miss Gates left the photos to a friend when she died in
1978. The friend's cousin recently saw the photos and donated them to AIA.
Note that #50 is labeled "nurses quarters",
which is the
current Quarters 10 at Camp Reynolds or its un-renovated neighbor.
Slide #52 is the Golden Gate without the bridge! The last slide in the
group is the chapel/school house at Camp Reynolds.
During this time, the area that we currently know as
Camp Reynolds was considered the 'West Garrison' of Fort McDowell.
