Angel Island is a place that inspires the questions, “What is that?”¬† The one hundred and¬†twenty historic buildings scattered around the island are all that remains of ninety nine years of occupation by the U.S. Army, forty years of operation as a Quarantine Station and 30 years of service as a U.S. Immigration Station. Three hospitals, a mule barn, two churches, a rock crusher, a 600-man barrack and a Nike Missile site all provide a clue to the island’s past.

To satisfy curious visitors and inspire them to discover more of the island’ secrets, several wayside interpretive panels were installed around the island. This book was created so that visitors could take home some of those tidbits of history.
