 |
| Angel Island depends on a variety of
volunteers to provide support that park employees alone cannot attain at
current funding levels. With the recent budget cuts, the role of the
volunteer in providing basic maintenance and support to the park is
especially critical.
Some volunteer roles require specific
training, which is generally provided during scheduled sessions.
Docent training is held annually in February/March. Park Host training is held
based on demand.
Check the calendar for details.
Volunteers and docents fill a number of valuable roles, including: |
 | Greet visitors and help them get acquainted with the
Island (Park Hosts) |
 | Assist with gardening, maintenance, carpentry, and the
restoration of historic buildings |
 | Do trail and/or habitat maintenance |
 | Lead tours of all types on the island (Docents) |
 | Develop interpretive materials (Docents) |
 | Provide office and gift shop support. (Park Host training optional) |
 | Create period costumes worn for special Angel Island
events |
|
| Some of these activities are one-time events,
while others, such as providing interpretive services as a docent,
involve more time. Some state park volunteers have been helping out for
nearly 20 years and have contributed thousands of hours. |
